As I write this, I can picture some of you gagging at the mention of Armour potted meat. Lol.
We have all heard horror stories of what might or might not be in this canned meat or hot dogs, bologna, or other assorted sausages for that matter.
Like what Frank said in the movie "Sling Blade" — "lips, peckers, and intestines" correct?
Ummmm, not really but maybe.
Canned meats are a way people preserve meat for future use without having to refrigerate it, it is made from mechanically separated chicken and pork (pureed) with multiple herbs and spices.
Canned meats have a bad reputation due to texture, taste, and the movie "Sling Blade", but I love the stuff.
My family did not have a lot of money while growing up, we were not poor but lower middle class. We had a roof over our heads, clothes for school, and three meals a day.
So, when you did not have much money and had a large family (we had six) you tended to eat a lot of potted meat, bologna sandwiches, and ramen and my mom was a master at making something out of nothing.
The Potted Meat Sandwich
Armour potted meat comes in a tiny blue round can (see picture above) with a flip top and has a texture similar to deviled ham or pate.
Here is my potted meat sandwich recipe:
White Bread x2
Dab of Mayonnaise or Mustard
Piece of Cheese
Salt
Pepper
It's that simple.
Don't ruin the damn sandwich by placing a vile slice of raw tomato on it (I loathe raw tomatoes.)
My parents like to ruin food by putting sliced tomatoes on everything.
I love them though, despite their food flaw. Lol.
Another weird thing they like to eat is a banana and peanut butter sandwich with mayonnaise (eww), I did gag while writing that.
Both are Virginians so it must be a Southern thing.
I get most people will not try potted meat (it's their loss); they are missing out on an American staple.
It is a tasty piece of heaven between two slices of bread.
Maybe it is just me, because I love hot dogs, Vienna sausage, bologna, and other assorted smoked sausages as well, regardless of their reputation.
I do not consider myself to be an adventuresome eater like Andrew Zimmern or Andrew Bourdain.
I am not going to eat bullballs in cream sauce or jackfruit, but I will eat some potted meat and the occasional fried chicken liver.
Am I the only one in here who likes potted meat or are there other foodies out there who love the stuff?
Please feel free to add a comment at the end and have a great evening!
Thank you for reading and have a good one:)

Hey Stephen - I hope you are having a good week. You triggered memories of high school days in Trinidad. These sandwiches were the easiest to make. We had our version of the "potted meat sandwich," but I have to say your version sounds more interesting. Thank you for sharing it.
I also gave you a follow on Medium. I spend most of my time there :)
